mexico_around

- san cristóbal de las casas, mexico.

This wonderful city is on everyMexico-Travel-Itinery so let me give you my 3 big highlights.(san cristobal is in the chiapas highlands and that can be rainy and pretty cold, especially in winter.

my three favorites:

- join mess at 7am at Santo Domingo

...and wake up with the local women and men who are selling traditional Mayan textiles and crafts of the Chiapas highlands. Catholic religion and deep Mayan tradition melting together.

- Na Bolom, www.nabolom.org ( the jaguar house)

this is where I found the real cowboy, archeologist Frans Blom, and his very strong an amazing wife, photographer Gertrude Duby-Blom. In the 40ies they met and fell in love in the Mexican jungle. Together they built a research center and museum for Mayan culture and preservation of the Lacandonian jungle. Na Bolom's spirit, the 19th century colonial house including a library and a little museum, makes you wanna go back to the 40es becoming part of the expeditions to the Mayan sites and the wild lacandonian jungle of the Chiapas highlands.

(Na Bolom, house)

(dinner table)

Great, great place that offers guest rooms, musican- and archaeologist residencies and brings them all together for dinners on a long table

- mexican food at the mercado municipal(9am-5pm)

There is no particular place you have to go, just wander around the market area and get lost in one if the little bit dodgy looking pathways that get you into the real market where food is served at simple kitchen where women cook and workers eat. if it's cold outside - take a soup!

(Rez con arroz y frijóles)

(on the streets of San cristóbal)
